Three Good Reasons To Be A Teacher?

I saw a sign today with this same slogan on it. Now I realize that people think it is “cute” or “funny,” but to me, it is downright insulting to the profession. Think about the message that something like this says to kids as it sits on a teacher’s desk. Is it still cute?

  1. Don’t get it. And, yes, it is insulting. How do people get through the day? This is not the job to be ‘mailing it in’.

  2. I think it’s terrible but every profession has stuff like this. Think of all the lawyer jokes.

  3. August wouldn’t even be a good reason for me if I believed in it–we start the school year the first week of August! ;^)

  4. Hmm…done with district stuff on June 11, start back at it on August 18.

Yeah….doesn’t quit fit the whole “3 months off” mantra.

  5. I should have noted that’s just the contract. I didn’t mention the ISTE conference I’m paying for, the session I’m leading at a conference in Iowa, and the class I’m teaching at our Area Education Association.

I’m not saying that I’m overworked or anything like that, just that the June/July/August joke isn’t funny because it isn’t true.

  6. And for most of us, take off June. We’re in school until the end of the month. Then grad classes, tech classes, and curriculum writing in July. t

  7. I agree. An insult to true professionals. Unfortunately this just plays into the hands of those who would criticise teachers in the misguided belief that it is long holidays and 3.30 finish that attract people to the profession. I have had my share of challenging this in the past. For as we all know you don’t switch off when the children leave and the long holidays are a myth. People need to recognise that teachers don’t just work when children are learning in front of them.
