What School Values vs. What the World Values

Regardless of what some educators want to think, we must be cognizant of the fact that we are preparing our students with skills and traits that will allow them to live successful lives. That’s why I selected to post this video clip by Jim Collins. As you watch, please make sure that you take note of the common trend of the characteristics he is talking about. Are you instilling these values in your kids? Do you value them in the classroom? Or do you place more of an emphasis on compliance and rote memorization? Actually, the information in this video would make a GREAT classroom poster and allow all of us to keep these ideas in perspective. Anyone want to make it?

  1. Amazing! I wonder how many teachers have these qualities. Many do, but not all. Without the passion I don’t think teachers can instill the thrill of learning with their students.

Even more amazing… there are districts that try to quash teacher passion by mandating strict adherence to the scripted programs.

  3. “The right people understand they don’t have a job, they have responsibilities.” I like this very much. The responsibility becomes paramount and when you feel that responsibility, limits of time and on role expectations become increasingly irrelevant. I am also struck by the implication that you won’t know if you have the right person until you have observed them handle their own failures. The right person owns their own mistakes and accepts the challenge of dealing with those mistakes.

When the poster gets made, share it.

  4. Larry Cuban once wrote, “How you teach becomes what you teach” and by this, he was stating that how we act and how we model is truly what we teach. If we, as educators, model these characteristics that Collins speaks of, we will, in effect, teach these qualities to our students.
