Further Evidence of Student Engagement With Technology

An article in today’s New York Times discusses something that much of the world already knows: much of the time that kids are awake these days, they are online and engaged in some type of media-rich content. My favorite is a comment in the article by a parent:

“By the time he was 4, he had all these math and science DVDs, and he was clicking through by himself, and he learned to read and do math early,” she said. “So if we’d had the conversation then, I would have said they were great educational tools.”

At what point is it that media goes from being utilized to enhance students’ learning to a hindrance and used sparingly. I am not arguing for the use of DVD’s all throughout the school day. What I am saying is that the whole notion of technology is second nature to today’s kids and we need to continually come up with ways to engage them with technology appropriately.

If kids are being raised with these media-rich products practically as an extension to their bodies, then why is education not harnessing its potential and using this type of “prior knowledge” to engage kids and improve critical thinking skills on an everyday basis?
