Yet Another Plea For Interdisciplinary Learning

The following is an excerpt from the book I am currently reading, “Brain Rules” by Dr. John Medina:

“Whether you are a waiter or a brain scientist, if you want to get the particulars correct, don’t start with the details. Start with the key ideas and, in a hierarchical fashion, form the details around these larger sections.” (Location 782-87; Kindle Version)

Think about what Medina is saying here. Can you hear the call for revamping educational curriculum to focus on interdisciplinary work and transferring of ideas across subjects? The problem is that we know this research exists, it has been proven in multiple experiments and case studies, yet, we continue to ignore these ideas and teach as though every subject exists in isolation.
I understand the plea for teaching kids American History or reading Shakespeare, but shouldn’t we consider other avenues that are more engaging (hence more effective) in a long life of learning? I think so. How about you?
